Cashman emphasized that Hal hasn’t given a firm number and that the instruction remains to bring everything possible to the table. In other words, the door is open to spending more if the right opportunities arise. He also pointed out that the Yankees haven’t been told to pull back from last season’s $319 million payroll, which exceeded the luxury tax threshold and ended in the ALDS against the Blue Jays.
Is a higher payroll necessary to upgrade the roster? Cashman acknowledged there are multiple ways to improve a team, suggesting that cost isn’t the sole barrier to success. The general manager highlighted that every owner would love to win more while spending less, underscoring the balance between value and performance. He noted that discussions with Steinbrenner haven’t changed this offseason, and the team did push payroll higher at the trade deadline last year.
If Bellinger returns, the Yankees would gain a proven bat who thrives against left-handed pitching—though the club could also lean on internal options like Jasson Domínguez or Spencer Jones for the left-field spot if the market doesn’t cooperate. Bringing him back could influence how the rotation and bullpen are staffed, especially with Carlos Rodón possibly back from the injured list around April or May, and Gerrit Cole returning in May or June. The bullpen also lost Devin Williams to the Mets, which adds another layer to potential midseason acquisitions.
