Toyota's RAV4: A Tale of Greed and Disappointment
In a shocking turn of events, some Toyota dealers are taking advantage of the highly anticipated RAV4 launch, leaving customers feeling betrayed. With markups of thousands of dollars over the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), these dealers are pushing the limits of ethical business practices.
The Greed Factor
Our investigation revealed a disturbing trend. Stevens Creek Toyota, for instance, is asking a whopping $52,857 for a 2026 RAV4 Limited, which is $4,700 more than the base price. And that's not all; they've also added $295 for dealer-installed accessories. But here's the kicker: the description includes packages and accessories worth $3,407, which raises questions about their pricing strategy.
Markups Across the Board
Magnussen's Toyota of Palo Alto seems to have a consistent markup of $3,999 on all 2026 RAV4 models. This means a RAV4 XSE, which should cost around $46,444, is listed for $50,443, and a Limited, with an MSRP of $48,083, is priced at $52,082. Even in California, where markups are somewhat expected, Molle Toyota of Kansas City has added a $1,104 "dealer adjustment" to their RAV4 Limited, increasing the price to $48,508 from $47,404.
A Pattern of Greed?
This isn't an isolated incident. Toyota dealers have a history of excessive markups. The Land Cruiser and Tacoma launches saw similar dealer adjustments, and some dealers even had the audacity to markup the Camry. It's a worrying trend that undermines the trust between customers and dealerships.
A Word of Advice
Don't fall victim to these markups. There are plenty of reputable dealers selling the RAV4 at MSRP, so you have options. And with Toyota's upcoming Super Bowl ad campaign, which will cost millions, promoting the redesigned RAV4, the timing couldn't be more ironic. The base model starts at $31,900 and offers an impressive hybrid powertrain with up to 236 hp.
So, what do you think? Are these markups justified, or is it a case of dealers taking advantage of eager customers? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
