A Play on Controversial Figure: Gerard Hutch's Life Story

The Ambassador Theatre in Dublin is set to host a play about a controversial figure in modern Irish history. The play, directed by Rex Ryan, focuses on Gerry Hutch, a veteran criminal and aspirant Dublin Central by-election candidate. The Criminal Assets Bureau and Revenue are pursuing Hutch for almost €800,000.

Ryan, who plays Hutch in the play, denies glamorizing the character. He aims to provide an honest representation of Hutch's life, starting from his 2023 acquittal of the murder of Kinahan organized crime group member David Byrne. The play's blurb states, 'Gerry bears witness to his lifetime of alleged crimes, triumphs, and misdemeanors.'

Ryan consulted Hutch on script aspects but assured that the protagonist would not financially benefit from the production. Hutch, who has not yet seen the play, plans to attend next week. He was less enthusiastic about answering questions, snapping, 'This is a play, I'm not going to talk about gardaí.'

Fianna Fáil Centenary Celebrations in Laois

As the centenary of Fianna Fáil's foundation approaches in May, Taoiseach Micheál Martin kicked off a roadshow in Laois. He praised Laois as a 'bedrock' for the party, which has been one of the most successful in Europe. Martin addressed hundreds of members in Portlaoise, highlighting the county's historical significance.

Martin also mentioned former Taoiseach Brian Cowen, who was in attendance. Cowen, a famous son of Offaly, served as a TD for Laois and his native county for 27 years. Martin expressed gratitude for Cowen's service, saying, 'It was a privilege to serve with and under him in government.'

Martin also found kind words for Laois representatives, including the late Paddy Lalor and Laois TD Sean Fleming, who is known for his hard work.

Ireland's Corruption Perception and Risks

Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries based on perceived levels of corruption. Ireland scored 76, placing it in joint 12th place. Despite this, the watchdog's Irish branch warns that the absence of daily headlines about corruption does not mean the risks have disappeared.

John Devitt, Transparency International Ireland's CEO, stated that corruption and illicit financial flows through Dublin pose threats to social cohesion, economic integrity, and democratic resilience. The group calls for government reforms, stronger political finance rules enforcement, and increased lobbying funding transparency.

The global average score in TI's rankings has fallen to 42, with 122 countries scoring below 50, indicating serious corruption problems internationally. Denmark, Finland, and Singapore are the cleanest countries, while Venezuela, Somalia, and South Sudan are the most corrupt.

Passport Security Concerns in Ireland

The Irish passport is renowned for its visa-free access and strong security features. However, over 150,000 passports have been reported lost or stolen in the past five years. In 2025, 32,230 passports were reported lost, and 2,712 were stolen, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee.

Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly described the numbers as 'startling.' McEntee assured that Interpol was notified of the loss or theft, which is taken seriously as it compromises personal data safety and can lead to fraud. The Henley and Partners ranking index places the Irish passport as the fourth most prized in the world, allowing visa-free access to 185 countries.
