Northampton Saints' Head Coach, Phil Dowson, is praising his players for their current position at the top of the standings, with a round of fixtures still remaining. This is a familiar feeling for the Saints, who were in a similar position before winning the competition in 2024. However, Dowson's recent decision to rotate his starting XV on the final weekend of that season backfired, resulting in a 43-12 defeat by Bath at The Rec.
Looking ahead, Dowson is planning to rest some regular starters and give playing time to squad members with less experience before the post-season shake-up. He acknowledges the short turnaround and the need to balance momentum and player fitness.
"We've got to make sure we balance that up and keep the momentum through Quins, but also look after the guys that are highly minuted and make sure they're good for a Friday night," Dowson said. "It's a short turnaround, so we've got to bear that in mind. We've got to make sure that we get the intensity right for the players that need it, and we need to take the intensity away from the players we think need that."
Dowson recognizes the strength of the top four to five teams in the league and the challenges that lie ahead in the semi-finals. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the different challenges each opponent presents.
"When you get to this point of the season, the top four, five teams are all very good," he continued. "Whoever you're playing [in the semi-finals], we know there will be different challenges, and understand that it's going to be very tough."
Despite the recent setback, Dowson's focus remains on the team's current position and the opportunities it presents. He is confident that the Saints can maintain their momentum and perform well in the remaining fixtures, ultimately aiming to reach the semi-finals and compete for the title.
