The Cleveland Browns have found their new defensive coordinator, and it's a familiar face in the NFL. Mike Rutenberg, the former defensive pass game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, is stepping into the role, according to NFL Network Insiders. This move comes as a strategic response to the departure of Jim Schwartz, who resigned after three seasons as the team's defensive coordinator. Rutenberg, a 44-year-old coach, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the Browns.
His journey began in 2013 as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he worked until 2019, holding various defensive coaching positions. Rutenberg then transitioned to the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 as a passing game specialist, followed by a role as the New York Jets' linebackers coach from 2021 to 2024. During his time with the Falcons, Rutenberg played a pivotal role in their strong passing defense, which was a key factor in their success.
The Falcons allowed an opponent to surpass 200 passing yards in just eight games, notably frustrating Bills quarterback Josh Allen in a prime-time upset over Buffalo in Week 6. Despite a slight regression in the second half of the season, the Falcons' defense finished 13th in passing yards allowed. This impressive defensive performance has likely caught the attention of the Browns, who are looking to build on their already strong unit.
The Browns boast a talented defense, including the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, and the Defensive Rookie of the Year, Carson Schwesinger. The team also features a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback, Denzel Ward, at the back end. Head coach Todd Monken has indicated that the defense will adopt a similar schematic approach to Schwartz's, emphasizing the playmakers' strengths.
With Rutenberg's expertise and the Browns' talented roster, the team is poised to maintain its status as one of the NFL's top defensive forces. The challenge now lies in Rutenberg's ability to implement his strategic vision and lead the Browns' defense to even greater heights.
