His journey began in 2013 as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he worked until 2019, holding various defensive coaching positions. Rutenberg then transitioned to the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 as a passing game specialist, followed by a role as the New York Jets' linebackers coach from 2021 to 2024. During his time with the Falcons, Rutenberg played a pivotal role in their strong passing defense, which was a key factor in their success.
The Falcons allowed an opponent to surpass 200 passing yards in just eight games, notably frustrating Bills quarterback Josh Allen in a prime-time upset over Buffalo in Week 6. Despite a slight regression in the second half of the season, the Falcons' defense finished 13th in passing yards allowed. This impressive defensive performance has likely caught the attention of the Browns, who are looking to build on their already strong unit.
