RUMOR ALERT: What Marvel Studios Has in Store for the Young Avengers and Champions in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and Beyond
Rumors are swirling about Marvel Studios' exciting plans for the Young Avengers and the Champions, suggesting that these youthful heroes will play significant roles in the upcoming Avengers films, specifically Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
A little over a year ago, it was rumored that Marvel Studios had abandoned its ambitions to create a standalone Young Avengers movie. Instead, the studio has seemingly shifted its focus towards developing a series centered around the Champions for Disney+. This adjustment raises eyebrows, especially since many fans feel the ideal time for the Young Avengers to unite may have already slipped away. Critics have noted that characters associated with this group have aged significantly, and the initial phases of the Multiverse Saga lacked the narrative clarity needed to position these heroes for a proper team-up.
Currently, it appears that Marvel is on the lookout for a showrunner to lead the Champions project. Additionally, Disney CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the Avengers brand. A spinoff featuring the Young Avengers that fails to meet audience expectations could potentially harm the mainline Avengers films, which are typically guaranteed successes at the box office.
Recently, a reputable scooper on Twitter, @MyTimeToShineH, shared an intriguing update: "The Champions/Young Avengers will be featured in both Doomsday and Secret Wars as a means to set up their series, which will unfold after Secret Wars." This development suggests that the forthcoming Avengers films could serve as a perfect platform to introduce this new team of superheroes.
As for the lineup of the MCU's Champions, it’s likely to include familiar faces like Wiccan (played by Joe Locke), Speed (Ruaridh Mollica), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), and Ironheart (Dominique Thorne).
Locke first appeared as Wiccan in Agatha All Along, while Iman Vellani gained recognition for her role as Ms. Marvel, hinting at her potential leadership of this new team in the closing moments of The Marvels. Hailee Steinfeld received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Kate Bishop in Hawkeye, further solidifying her place in this group.
Xochitl Gomez made her debut as America Chavez in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and her character’s reality-hopping abilities may play a crucial role in the upcoming Avengers narratives. Dominique Thorne first introduced Riri Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and is expected to headline her own series, Ironheart. Kathryn Newton took on the role of Cassie Lang in 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and Ruaridh Mollica is set to debut as Speed in the upcoming VisionQuest series on Disney+.
When asked earlier this year about the future of the Young Avengers, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige expressed optimism, stating, "Potentially. It ultimately depends on where we can find the best story and what unique combinations will work. Who would be enjoyable for them to interact with? They need to connect with each other, but also with others in the broader universe."
However, like other projects such as Nova and Strange Academy, the Champions initiative could face uncertainty. Its success will likely hinge on how audiences respond to the characters when they finally come together in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
What do you think? Will Marvel successfully bring the Young Avengers and Champions to the forefront, or is this yet another missed opportunity? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
