Winter driving safety is a serious matter, and a recent report reveals a concerning statistic: a significant portion of vehicles in Latvia are ill-equipped to handle winter conditions. According to the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), approximately 11% of cars on Latvian roads are currently sporting tires that aren't up to the task.
On December 4th, Latvian Radio reported on the findings of a CSDD inspection in the Jelgava area, the first such raid of the winter season. Within just a few hours, 80 vehicles were checked. The results were quite telling: nine of those vehicles were found to have tires with tread depths below the minimum requirement of 4 millimeters.
But here's where it gets controversial... Two vehicles were deemed to have tires in such a hazardous state that their license plates were immediately confiscated. This immediately raises the question: Are drivers fully aware of the risks they're taking?
CSDD representative Mārtiņš Mālmeisters offered some insight, stating that the situation might be influenced by the current weather conditions, as roads haven't yet become excessively slippery. He noted a slight increase in violations compared to the previous year's initial inspections. Last year, only about 1% of vehicles faced license plate removal on the first day of inspections, while this year the number rose to approximately 2.5%.
It's important to remember that Latvian law mandates that vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes must be fitted with winter tires from December 1st to March 1st. This is a crucial safety measure to protect drivers and other road users during the challenging winter months.
