A legal battle ensued, with Kantner seeking financial compensation and attempting to prevent the band from using the "Jefferson Starship" name. In a surprising turn of events, the name became the property of Grace Slick and their manager, Bill Thompson, with all parties agreeing to retire the name.

Rebranded as Starship, the band continued with Slick at the helm until 1988. Looking back, Slick's memories of this era are not entirely positive. In a 2007 interview, she shared her thoughts on the '80s Starship, describing it as a time when "songs were written by other people...it was just dumb."

Slick's preference for music that was "interesting, different, and written by the band" highlights her commitment to artistic integrity. This stance is evident in her comments about Starship's debut single, "We Built This City," a song she admits was a commercial success but lacked the personal touch she valued.
