Among the standout players making their mark on the opening day were Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova, both of whom emerged victorious. This day was filled with gripping three-set battles, alongside a few fortunate lucky losers who seized their chance to shine on the big stage. Parks Rallies Back Against Shnaider
Alycia Parks endured a challenging start in her first-round match against Diana Shnaider, where she managed to snag only one game in the first set. However, she swiftly put that setback behind her, executing a thrilling comeback to claim victory with a scoreline of 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). This victory was particularly impressive as it saw her upset the No. 15 seed in a nail-biting third set that lasted an exhausting 72 minutes. Parks had battled through the qualifiers to reach this stage, overcoming Rebeka Masarova and Solana Sierra in the process.
In many ways, this win echoed Parks' earlier triumph over Alexandra Eala at the Australian Open. Just weeks ago, after losing the first set without winning a game, Parks managed to maintain her composure amidst a boisterous crowd, ultimately winning that match 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. Interestingly, Parks also defeated Shnaider in the first round of Doha last year, marking a commendable repeat performance.
Zvonareva Celebrates First Main Draw Win Since 2023
Vera Zvonareva has quietly made her way back into the tennis scene after undergoing surgery in 2024, which sidelined her from June 2024 until December 2025. In her comeback tournament, she impressively reached the singles final at an ITF 100 event in Dubai, along with reaching the doubles final there and performing well at a WTA 125 event in Canberra and the Australian Open this past January.
On Sunday, Zvonareva celebrated her first tour-level singles main draw victory since the Jiangxi Open in October 2023, defeating Peyton Stearns with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. This puts her into the second round in Doha, where she is set to face Mboko.
Mboko's All-Around Showcase
Victoria Mboko made a strong impression in her debut at Doha, winning decisively in straight sets against Marie Bouzkova with scores of 7-5, 6-2. She capitalized on her opponent's second serves, winning an impressive 77% of points on those serves. As the No. 10 seed, she will next compete against Vera Zvonareva in the second round.
One of the day’s standout moments came from an all-around brilliant hot shot from Mboko. After an impressive forehand rally with Bouzkova and a deft drop shot at the net, Mboko showcased her diverse skill set in this remarkable play during her victory.
Frech Fights Off Three Match Points to Advance
In an intense match lasting nearly three hours, Magdalena Frech triumphed to move on to the second round with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7) against the No. 13 seed, Liudmila Samsonova. In a dramatic turn, Frech saved three match points to secure this hard-fought victory. She was among the lucky losers who earned a spot in the main draw after a previous defeat to Zvonareva in the qualifying rounds.
Frech will now face Ann Li, who had a smooth victory against Leylah Fernandez, winning 6-4, 6-3.
Mertens and Cocciaretto Among Other Day 1 Victors
Elise Mertens, like Elena Rybakina, entered the Doha tournament following a title win at the Australian Open in doubles. However, her singles campaign began with a quick 68-minute victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Similarly, Elisabetta Cocciaretto also impressed as a lucky loser, claiming victory with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-2 against Elsa Jacquemot, exploiting four break points during the match. She will now take on Coco Gauff in the next round.
