Imagine being just 24 years old, full of life and dreams, and then suddenly, your heart betrays you. That's exactly what happened to Faye Greenwood, a Lewes-based influencer, who experienced a heart attack so severe it led to a life-saving heart transplant. "I couldn't believe I was having a heart attack at 24," she recounts, a sentiment that resonates with anyone who believes youth equates to invincibility. But Faye's story is a stark reminder that heart issues can strike anyone, regardless of age.
Faye's ordeal began during a holiday in Paris with her fiancé, Ailbhe Lower, known online as Mr Bruv, who is also an influencer. What started as a romantic getaway quickly turned into a nightmare. Faye started experiencing excruciating chest pains and vomiting. "I can't really remember a lot," she explains, "but I just felt I was in really bad pain, something I've never felt before. A feeling of doom, like the world was closing in."
And this is the part most people miss: recognizing the symptoms quickly can be life-saving. Ailbhe explained that due to language barriers and a general disbelief that someone so young could be having a heart attack, it took a harrowing six and a half hours before Faye was finally admitted to a hospital. Time, in situations like these, is truly of the essence.
Back in the UK, the news wasn't any easier to digest. Doctors were baffled about the cause of the heart attack, suggesting that her previously diagnosed dilated cardiomyopathy may not have been the primary factor. Faye was then told that she might have to wait up to a year for a heart transplant. Fortunately, a donor was found much sooner, and she was able to leave the hospital in just over four months. "It's just something you never really think that you're going to have to deal with," she says, highlighting the unexpected and shocking nature of her experience.
But here's where it gets controversial... The couple faced a staggering £14,000 medical bill from the French hospital, compounded by an additional £40,000 to cover the cost of an air ambulance back to the UK. This financial burden was particularly devastating, as they had only recently started saving to move out of Ailbhe's mother's house. "So we were only just getting on track with our lives and our jobs and everything, and then it just went downhill," Faye laments. Is it fair that someone facing a health crisis also has to shoulder such immense financial pressure? This situation raises important questions about healthcare accessibility and the financial safety nets available to people facing unexpected medical emergencies.
The experience has also cast a shadow over Faye's future career. As a fashion and lifestyle influencer, she's now uncertain how brands will react to her post-transplant body and the visible scarring. "Now it's a lot different because I have a lot of scarring and things and I don't really know how brands all react to that sort of thing," she explains.
Ailbhe aptly describes the situation as "unfair." He jokingly contrasts his own unhealthy habits with Faye's dedication to healthy living: "I drink loads of pints, eat Greggs every day, sit on my bum, and then she's having her green shakes and doing Pilates every day and she's the one who has the heart attack." This highlights the often-unpredictable nature of health and the fact that even those who prioritize wellness can still face serious medical challenges.
Faye's message is clear: don't ignore potential warning signs, regardless of your age. "If you think anything could be wrong, even a very small thing, just definitely get it checked out or push the doctors to check you out," she urges. Ailbhe echoes this sentiment, adding, "Don't just think: 'It'll be fine, it won't happen to me', because we thought that." Their story serves as a powerful reminder that vigilance and proactive healthcare are crucial, even when you feel young and healthy.
