Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! We are off to a great start, we have recently had our school parking lot paved and a section of our roof has been replaced (or at least it should be done by Tuesday – fingers crossed!). Our school office is open and we are busy getting school supplies organized, classrooms prepared, accepting new registrations and working to ensure a smooth start to the school year. Steve and his crew have worked very hard over the summer getting the school in great shape for the 750 students!
Our Extended Day Program will begin on Tuesday September 3rd. We have just over 100 students registered, mostly for the after school care program. If you are dropping your child(ren) off for the morning program please walk your child to the program through the front doors of the school to the gym where you will meet with the Extended Day Program (EDP) staff. It is imperative that you always check in with the EDP staff when dropping off and picking up your child(ren). All students registered for the after school EDP will meet at 2:30 in the gym. For all inquires about the EDP please contact the Early Learning Centre at 613-239-2378. I would strongly recommend that you review the EDP Parent Handbook for all details about the program. We look forward to the addition of this program at SLPS and appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through the implementation.
First Day – What do I do?
We look forward to welcoming 750 students on Tuesday September 3rd. at 7:45 a.m.
For students entering grades 1 through 3 – at the front of the school there will be three tables with either the number 1, 2 or 3 posted above them on the school wall. Please proceed to the table based on your child’s grade level. We will have SLPS teachers and parent volunteers wearing orange vests to assist you in finding your child’s class. All teachers will be standing next to a chair with their class name posted(e.g. 1A, 1B, etc). You can leave your child with their teacher. Once all the students have been gathered the teacher will take them to their class. We would ask that parents DO NOT enter the school with their child as we do not have sufficient space. It will be an easier transition for your child if they can move forward with their classmates and teacher. Please know we will contact you if there are any concerns with your child.
For students entering grades 4 through 8 – please proceed to the back of the school, using the north side of the school. There will be a table set up with volunteers to assist students in grade 4 and 5 find their class.
Grade 6 class lists will be posted on portable 7.
Grade 7 class lists will be posted on portable 8.
Grade 8 class list will be posted on portable 9.
Teachers will be available to greet the students and take them to their class.
If your child will be taking the bus, we encourage you to begin this routine the first day. We will have staff/volunteers available to greet them and ensure they get to their class. As many of you know, we have very limited parking at the school.
Bus Transportation – if you have any questions about bus transportation please consult the OSTA website at www.ottawaschoolbus.ca If you would like to apply for an empty seat please complete the application form and return it to the office. Decisions will be based on seat availability and student need early in October and letters will be sent home to advise whether your application has been approved.
Look for your child to bring home important school news and forms the first day of school. Please take the time to review these forms, complete them as required and return them to their teacher and or office as soon as possible.
Our first School Council meeting will be on Tuesday September 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. All community members are welcome to join us. We encourage you to become involved in School Council by submitting a completed nomination form and returning it to the office. This is a very large school and we need the support of many parents to make Stephen Leacock a great learning environment for all students.
If you have any further questions please feel free to come by the school office or call us at 613-592-2261 or email SLPS@ocdsb.ca We will do our best to foster a sense of belonging for each child at SLPS. See you all on Tuesday – and I know the sun WILL be shining!
